 Professional opera singer, Katie Leemhuis, is an experienced music instructor and professional performer, committed to  providing her students with the highest caliber of vocal instruction.  Her teaching background includes vocal and piano instruction in classical, musical theater, jazz, and popular music. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Voice & Opera at Temple University.

 

While in both undergraduate and graduate school, Katie taught a studio of students of varying ages and levels. She has been singing her whole life; throughout her childhood, Katie was involved in choirs and theater groups, and studied private piano, clarinet, and classical voice.

 

As a professional opera singer, Katie has widely gathered acclaim for having “a large, beautiful, dark instrument, intelligently used, and spot-on dramatic timing” (St. Louis Today).  Her voice has been described as having a “sweet, penetrating vocal timbre and refined fit” (La Nacion Line), that is “stunning in its combination of musical and dramatic nuance” (Living at the Opera).  Katie has performed with esteemed opera companies such as the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Chicago Opera Theater, Opera Colorado, the Ravinia Music Festival, the Tanglewood Music Festival, and Opera Theatre of St. Louis, and in such venues as the Metropolitan Opera, the Hollywood Bowl, and Carnegie Hall.​

 

Katie is a 2012 National Semi-Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.  She is also the first place winner of the 2012 Heida Hermanns International Voice Competition, the 2012 Bel Canto Vocal Scholarship Competition, the 2010 Musicians’ Club of Women Competition, the 2009 American Opera Society Competition, the 2009 Union League Civic of Chicago Competition, and the 2007 Opera Columbus International Vocal Competition.   She is the second place winner of the 2011 Gerda Lissner Foundation Vocal Competition, the 2011 Bel Canto Vocal Competition, and the 2010 Fort Worth McCammon Competition.
